Top 5 Family Fun Activities in Sarasota

Sarasota County offers family fun for story-loving tots and older siblings.

Last week I shared my two favorite beaches on the Gulf Coast in Sarasota Co.  Today I want to share my "Top 5 Family Fun Activities" you and your kids are sure to enjoy!

1. The Ringling - Circus Museum

Thanks to the legacy of circus magnate John Ringling, Sarasota is known as the “Circus Capital of the World”.  The Tibbals Learning Center at The Ringling Circus Museum has the world’s largest miniature circus. The 3,800-square-foot display includes the big top with circus performers as well as the performers’ living quarters and dining tent. The Museum also offers hands-on activities for your kids to enjoy like shooting a pretend cannonball and walking a makeshift high wire.

We made our first visit to @TheRingling this week. We started at the Circus Museum and Tibbals Learning Center. 🎪🎪🎪 The Howard Bros. Circus Model was quite impressive. From the 3-ring big top tent to the numerous animal tents to the resting quarters, I had no idea that the traveling circus was so LARGE! I can’t imagine how they moved from city to city like they did. (Tip for Disney fans – make sure you watch the live action @dumbo movie before visiting as it made even more exciting, IMO.) Next was the interactive portion of the museum where the kids were able to walk the wire, learn how to apply “whiteface” clown make up, and explore circus treasures. If you want to learn more about circus king John Ringling, head over to @VisitSarasotaCo for a visit! . . . . . #VisitFlorida #VisitSarasota #VisitSarasotaCo #MySarasota #FloridaVacation #FloridaLife #CircusLife #RinglingCircus #FLTourists #OrlandoBlogger #FloridaBlogger #FamilyFirst #FamilyVacation #JohnRingling #CircusMuseum

2. Build your Own Tervis

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I have a huge collection of Tervis tumblers.  At the Osprey Factory Store, visitors can build a customized Tervis in the Lab! My daughter was able to pick her cup size and color, and then created a custom design to commemorate our visit. The heritage location also offers discounted tumblers as well as new designs.

3. TreeUmph! Adventure Course

TreeUmph! Adventure Course is Southwest Florida’s only elevated adventure course.  Guests can zip, climb and swing through the trees!  The course has over 10 football fields of challenging terrain and hundreds of aerial adventure games. Don't miss this exhilarating adventure!

4. Public Art in Downtown Sarasota

Sarasota has an abundance of public art.  In fact, there are 81 (and counting) pieces of art in the City of Sarasota’s Public Arts Collection.  Walk through the streets of downtown Sarasota and discover the thought provoking sculptures that are found around every corner.  You may even stop to pose with a few pieces.

5. Big Cat Habitat

While enjoying dinner at Prague Restaurant, a sweet lady dining next to us encouraged us to visit Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary. As the name suggests, the sanctuary is a safe heaven for rescued animals. Our visit offered a close up experience that I won't forget anytime soon. I was able to hold a live gator and feed a bear!

“Our fans loved the magic comedy show before, but now it’s going to be even more interactive and exciting,” explains Brian Wayne, general manager of WonderWorks Orlando. “This is a show that all ages can enjoy. It’s funny, it’s magical, and it’s an amazing experience for all who attend.”

The Outta Control Magic Comedy Dinner Show will be adding the new close up experience starting the last week of June 2019. The new elements will include mind-bending magic that the whole family will enjoy. The magic in the show will become more “magical” and make the show an even more amazing experience for all. • Tony Brent will reenact the famous and legendary feat by the world’s most famous magician, Harry Houdini, dating back to the early 1900’s. He will present the “Straightjacket Escape,” giving the audience a full view of the escape.
  • Dinner show guests can enjoy a delicious meal of unlimited hand-tossed pizza that is made fresh in-house, as well as salad, dessert, and unlimited drinks, including beer and wine.

“This is going to be an exciting time to see the magic comedy dinner show,” added Wayne. “Combining great food with a world-class magic show is going to give people a one-of-a-kind experience. We look forward to seeing the smiles and good vibes this show creates for all who attend.”

Tony Brent is the star and producer of The Outta Control Magic Comedy Dinner Show, which is the longest running magic dinner show in the world. His show combines magic tricks, comedy, audience participation, and more. The show was named “One of America’s Ten Best Magic Shows” by the Travel Channel.

The BEST beaches in Florida can be found in Sarasota Co.

The clear blue water on Florida's Gulf Coast is our family's favorite, especially on the west coast near Sarasota.

Did you realize six barrier islands hug Sarasota County’s 40 miles of coastline?  The barrier islands, many called “keys,” each have their own personality.  My family visits Lido Key and Siesta Key often -- both only a two hour drive from Orlando.

The beaches of Sarasota Co. offer blue water and white sand.

-------------------------------------------------

Siesta Key: Flip flops Required

Winner of Dr. Beach’s Best Beach in 2017, Siesta Key is the most popular beach in the area.  The sand is 99% pure Quartz so it's soft and cool on the feet.  And kids love the crystal clear blue water.  This eight-mile island is accessible by two bridges from the mainland. There is a lot to do in Siesta Key, from parasailing to kayaking to shopping to dining.  You will never get bored!

-------------------------------------------------

Lido Key: Timeless Sophistication

Lido Key is nestled between Longboat Key to the north and Siesta Key to the south, and is my kids favorite due due to the calm blue waters.  And bonus --the crowd in Lido is usually light and quiet, which makes relaxing very easy! Although a public beach, North Lido gives the impression of a secluded hideaway, with 3,000 feet of sugary sand and a nature trail for guests to wander along in relative privacy.

-------------------------------------------------

Barnie's 49 Special Blend to Benefit those Impacted by the Pulse Tragedy

The year was 1996. I remember it well because it was my first winter in Orlando.  It was one of those wet, cold, nasty days where you really want to stay inside, under a blanket, but a friend convinced me to head to the mall with her to finish up Christmas shopping.

As we walked by Barnie's Coffee Shop and my friend suggested we grab a cup of Santa's White Christmas.  At the time I was not a coffee drinker and so I ordered a nice cup of hot chocolate. Somehow, as we sat down to rest for a few minutes, our drinks got switched and ... It was love at first sip.  And also the beginning of my addiction relationship with coffee.  Although Barnie's Coffee + Tea has gone through changes, one thing has remained the same, Barnie's makes a damn good coffee!

This week, Barnie’s Coffee + Tea, Orlando’s original coffee company, unveiled its “49” Special Blend Coffee during the One Orlando Alliance’s Love and Kindness on the Lawn event.

Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, June 12th, proceeds from the sale of each bag of coffee will go directly to One Orlando Alliance to benefit those impacted by the Pulse tragedy.

“Barnie’s is humbled to support One Orlando Alliance in their ongoing work of helping those impacted by the Pulse tragedy and we support their mission of creating a safer, more inclusive community for all,” said Scott Uguccioni Chief Sales & Marketing Officer at Barnies Coffee & Tea Co. “The 49 coffee is our way we can give back, honor the victims and share the message of love and kindness, one bag at a time.”

“We are delighted that Barnie’s is supporting the work of our coalition. It is up to all of us, in the Central Florida community, to ensure that those affected by the Pulse tragedy continue to receive the support and services needed to heal,” said Jennifer Foster, Executive Director of One Orlando Alliance. “The proceeds from the 49 Special Blend will go a long way to making this possible and we are grateful that Barnie’s have stepped up in such a thoughtful and innovative way.”

The 49 Special Blend priced at $12.49, will be available beginning June 12th at BarniesCoffee.com and can be shipped worldwide. It will also be sold at Barnie’s Café in Winter Park, Florida and various retailers around Orlando.

A Weekend Trip to Sebring, Fl

Sebring is a great location for families wanting to unplug and relax for a weekend! The town is "old Florida" at its finest.

Founded in 1912 by Ohio Industrialist George Sebring, the quiet city is  located 90-minutes from Orlando, and is the perfect spot for a weekend getaway when you are wanting to relax and reconnect with your family.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The itinerary below is perfect for a three-day weekend.  However, if you want more information on attractions in Sebring, I suggest your stop at the Chamber office upon arrival.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday (Day 1):

Check into the exquisite Inn on the Lakes.  (Check-in begins at 4pm.)  The property was rated #1 in Sebring by Trip Advisor and you will soon agree! The tower suites are my favorite, although standard double bed rooms are also available. Each of the 155 rooms and suites are slightly different...it's what makes me wanting to go back again and again.
(Tip: Don't forget to meet the hotel cat, CP, who resides in the lobby!)

A post shared by Jen | Yellow Beads Blog (@yellowbeadsandme) on

Do you hear the dinner bell ringing? Just a few minutes south of Inn on the Lakes, you can find Cowpoke's Watering Hole.  Offering both indoor and outdoor seating, this is the place for meat lovers to enjoy dinner.  The rib-eye and prime rib are amazing.  The restaurant also serves a variety of fish and seafood dishes.

(Photo courtesy of Cowpoke's Watering Hole/FB)

Saturday (Day 2):

Rise and shine, but take it slow. Remember this weekend is about unwinding!  Savor your morning cup of coffee on your balcony while looking below in the lake for local wildlife.

When you are ready to get the day started, enjoy a late breakfast at Chicanes located inside Inn on the Lakes (included with your stay) or head over to Sebring Diner.  Once caffeinated, it's time to explore Downtown Sebring!  Your first stop is the Sebring Soda + Ice Cream Works. The shop offers over 300 varieties of craft soda all without high fructose corn syrup.

Enjoy a stroll around the circle while stopping in a few local shops and boutiques. You may be surprised with what you find!

It's time to rest your feet for a bit and I suggest you head to Faded Bistro & Beer Garden to enjoy a cold beer and a tapas (or two). The garden has plenty of space for the kids to explore and burn off some energy.

As the afternoon temps are warming up, it's a great time to head back to the Inn for a dip in the pool.  The team at Inn on the Lakes has done a fantastic job with the landscaping on the deck.  You will feel as though you have been transported to paradise (especially if you order a Strawberry Daiquiri)!

The day is drawing to an end and by now your little ones are probably getting hungry.  I suggest you stay onsite at Chicanes for dinner.  It's one of the area's finest spots. I recommend the Pan Fried Grouper or one of the steaks.  After dinner, walk out to the deck to enjoy the sunset over the lake.

Sunday (Day 3):

Today is about discovering all the natural beauty Sebring has to offer. Consider an airboat ride with Airboat Wildlife Adventure; or if you would prefer to explore at your own pace, I suggest a nature stroll at Highlands Hammock State Park

Grab a late lunch at Apex Restaurant, located in the Sebring Seven Hotel. The hamburgers are huge--and delish--as are the homemade chips. The hotel name, “Seven” is inspired by where it is situated on the Sebring International Raceway circuit – Turn 7. Make sure to walk outside afterwards, to get a glimpse of  the famous raceway.

On your way out of town today, make sure to stop by Maxwell's Groves, a country store that offers a sprawling front porch, for a souvenir (perhaps a homemade jam or salad dressing). Of course you can't leave without enjoying a freshly squeezed orange juice or a cup of soft serve ice cream!

Hopefully by the end of the weekend, you have discovered a piece of Old Florida that will leave your feeling refreshed!
